What is Graphic Design? Beginners Guide and why it is important?

Graphic design as we know it takes a huge part of our life today. Even some experts might say that it is one of the main forces in art that pushes the boundaries of creativity.

It is seen everywhere – in cars, in materials, technology, signs, packaging, marketing and advertising, even photography.

In this current article, we will break down to you what graphic design really is, its roots and why it is so important in the last two centuries.  Let’s start, shall we?

Graphic design is the continuous process of visual communication, as there can be used methods such as typography, photography, iconography, illustration and more to communicate with people through visual elements.

The people who are practising the jobs are called “graphic designers” and they can work both on hand or digitally to create magnificent original designs or replicate already launched ones.

Graphic designers, especially great ones, study multiple types of illustration and make sure they work “truly speaks” to the people. With imagery and visual representation, they can send different ideas, slogans and messages.

Creating visual compositions is not an easy task, it might seem like it is, but some graphic designers spend a big part of their lives mastering their craft to actually create something that the world has never seen before.

They are not only artists but innovators. This is a real fact when we are talking about the development of graphic design in the last 100 years.

The term “graphic design” was made up by William Addison Dwiggins in 1922, almost a century ago, but we know the craft has been with us for more than that.

In the past, people didn’t call it graphic design, but different eras it was explained as paintings, typography, drawings and symbols, some of which shape our reality still to this day.

One thing is for sure, graphic design has come a long way, these days we take it for granted. Famous logos, scripts, book designs are just a small portion of the whole world of graphic design.  Our society is lucky to live in the digital era where we can learn from our laptops and mobile devices and be graphic designers ourselves.

Not only we have the tools and technology, but huge amounts of data that gives the opportunity to grow, create and invent.

Graphic design and designers are extremely pivotal and the work only gets more interesting as technology develops. We, ourselves, can express our ideas as designers.

A brief history of graphic design. What was it like in the past?

Having history proof and components from 15,000 BC we can agree that some of the first graphic designs in Europe are real monuments and will have value for ages to come.

Symbols in caves, the Blau Monument and others are just some of the first acknowledged graphic designs in history and they have impacted hundreds of generations until today.

Yes, these fragments that are frozen in time are different from what we call today graphic design but they are proof that people needed to express some sort of message into stones, walls and leather in a sense of efficient visual communication.

Talking again of ancient design and history, about 105 AD – 1500 AD is marking the invention of paper, which by any means is the foundation of printing.

A whole millennium later different drawing and characters were made possible to be put for printing. Here’s another milestone in achieving the success along the road to graphic design as we know it today.

Some of the first illustrations in a printed book date back to somewhere between 1450 and 1460.

The Industrial Revolution in 1760-1800 hit hard and pushed new boundaries for graphic design. Lithography has beenlaunched. Machines started doing all the work which before was done only on hand and finally in 1800 the world has welcomed the first printing press. This is a monumental moment in time.

By the start of 1900, Frank Wright released “ The Art and Craft of The Machine”  that has a lot of principles and information valuable to this day.

Colour printing, advertising, the production of products and services doubled, even tripled in the following years, so people were wondering how to sell better, faster and people to be satisfied.

Companies started creating marketing campaigns, colourful posters, banners and billboards to change the whole mindset of consumers. They succeeded in that big time.

Finally, by the start of 1990, a company named Adobe, we all know of it today, created Photoshop. It revolutionized graphic design on everything as we know it today. We witness some of the finest graphics, designs, posters, pictures and photography through the incredible software and it only getting better with every next launch.

People are studying it for years, so they can become specialists in Photoshop and start a high-paid job in a digital agency or a magazine, so they can revisit and remodel all types of designs with this amazing software.

A good designer is one who can produce beautiful designs to the delight of the audience. A good design is a design capable of bringing out the emotion of the audience; it should be able to connect the observer to the message in which the designer is trying to convey. LINE

Lines used when carrying out a design might be thin, smooth, fragmented, and uneven. Lines are the start point for most designs. It doesn’t matter whether the designer is trying to make a sketch or carry out a painting; it all begins with a simple line. The different types of lines include vertical line, horizontal line, diagonal line, curved line, and zigzag line. Lines used in designs can be joined together at different angles to form a particular shape or form.

COLOR

Colour aid to brighten the mood of the design helps to make it more attractive to the viewers’ eyes. Colors help to bring out the emotions in people; different types of colors have different meanings. Therefore, the designer needs to know the right set of colors to use in a particular setting. When carrying out a design for a particular brand, it is important to have a deep insight into what information the brand is trying to pass to the public; this way, it will be easier for the design to know the right color combination.

SHAPE

The shape is another important element of design, and it can come in various categories we have a circle, triangle, rectangle, square, and so on. When used appropriately, these different shapes can greatly add to the beauty of the design. It has become so easy for designers today to generate different types of shapes, and this has been made possible using different computer software that is programmed to create different types of shapes. The use of these different shapes helps to add style and beauty to the design.

TEXTURE

Texture can be described as the surface quality of the design, and it also tends to mean how the design feels or looks when the audience visualizes the design.

TYPOGRAPHY

Typography is an essential element of design; it is described as the design’s style or appearance. Typography has a lot to do with the fonts used in the design, the symbols, and word impressions in the design. It is important to arrange the word that is contained in a design in an orderly manner. This is to ensure the audience can have a proper understanding of the message that is being passed.
